Seeking Peace
I sat down in an empty booth, far away from where my family sat. I knew they weren’t really there, they were just an illusion created by my mind. Even so, I couldn't stand to watch them suffer. The restaurant was slowly filling up with people, and the customers loud voices were masking my family’s sobs. I enjoyed watching everyone that came in since it distracted me from the problem at hand. Richard Crimson. I refused to live like this until he died, if he was not killed I would have to wait over 50 years for him to die of old age. I refused to watch my family suffer for 50 years, I was not going to live like this.
I sat there for hours, planning my revenge, until something caught my attention. A teenage boy came out of the washroom in rush. He was dirty from head to toe and looked exhausted. I could have even sworn that he was covered in blood. Terrified, he looked around for a while, until he decided himself and sat in my booth. “Do you mind if I sit here?” He asked before sitting down. My mouth fell open. ‘You can see me?’ I thought. I couldn’t believe it, I was overjoyed, maybe he could help me kill Richard. My bubble of happiness burst when I realized that he wasn’t looking at me, but at a girl sitting next to me, who was reading adoption papers. When did she get here? I thought. The two quickly started a conversation, and explained what they were doing here. The girl beside me, who I learned was named Amelia, had just learned that she was adopted. And the boy, Mateo, claimed to have been chased by a murder in a tunnel system that lead to the restaurant. He gave a physical description of his pursuer, and I had no doubt that he had been chased by Richard. Everything fit him perfectly, to his dark empty eyes, long unkempt beard and scrawny figure. I was excited to learn that he was near, as long as he didn’t leave this town I could reach him. Amelia and Mateo began talking about calling the cops, and I began to panic. If he went to jail, I wouldn’t be able to kill him and I’d be stuck like this for years. It would be like I was going to jail with him. I tried to get their attention, shouting at them, but as I already knew they couldn’t see or hear me. I slammed my fists on the table in frustration, I hated being dead. To my surprise, by doing so I knocked down a cup of tea. For a quick second Amelia noticed the odd movement, but was soon distracted by Mateo’s gasp. We followed his panicked looked to a man standing beside the washroom, Richard. He spotted the kids and they dashed out of the dinner. Amelia knew too much she was now on Richard hit list, with Mateo. At this moment I knew that it was possible for me to physically move things. However I wasn’t strong enough. I needed time to practice, so I followed them in their chase. When Richard found Amelia and Mateo, I would be there waiting to kill him.
Amelia and Mateo were being so careful, watching where they stepped to prevent leaving a trail that Richard could follow. All their efforts turned to waste, now and then I was able to leave behind my own footprints, leading Richard to them. I knew it was wrong using them as bait, but I was sure that we could beat him in fight. It was three against one and all he had was a knife, we could find our own weapons. I easily ran back and forth, making sure Mr. Rich was on the right path. Running was an easy task, when you could go through obstacles, like trees, and when you didn’t have to worry about breathing. I was happy that I could go through the trees, but a little annoyed by the rain. I couldn’t pick up a knife yet, but the rain was still drenching me. After hours of running through the spooky, wet forest, breathless Mateo and Amelia arrived at their destination; Deans Marina. Amelia had said that her childhood boat was there and that it would be a great place to hide. Once they entered the Marina and found Amelia’s boat, they both looked relieved. They thought it was over, but what they didn’t know was that Richard was circling the building as they hid. I slowly started to panic, Richard was getting close too fast. I hadn’t mastered grabbing objects yet and he was already right outside the Marina, searching for a way in that would go unnoticed by Amelia and Mateo. He surely didn’t want them to run away again. I thought that it would have been easier to kill him, and I didn’t think that Amelia and Mateo would be so stupid. They just stood there hiding, easy targets for Richard. I thought they would have at least searched for weapons that they could use to defend one another, but they just stood still, completely defenseless.
I went outside to search for Richard and realized that he had locked every entrance except one, preventing his victims from escaping. I saw him ahead of me entering a window, the only way in and out. I being dead, didn’t need the window, so I rushed inside and reached the two helpless kids before he did. I could see him coming behind them, but they didn’t. They were trapped and Richard knew it. The psychotic smile he had proved that he knew the fight was almost over and that he would win. I tried to warn them and once again failed. Amelia and Mateo would die because of me, I basically gave them to Richard. I had become my worst enemy. I was as bad as Richard. I was overwhelmed with guilt as I watched the hope rush out of the teens when Richard put a knife to Mateo's throat. Mr. Rich tied their hands to the ceiling, just as Mateo described the placement of the dead bodies in the tunnels. Richard obviously wanted to take his time and enjoy his murders. I didn’t want them to suffer, if he did kill them I wanted it to be a quick death, but I was happy to get more time. As he tied them up, I tried to grab one of Richard’s knife that he had left on a table nearby. I was able to hold it up, but not long enough, I needed more time. However, Richard was done and I had run out of time. I couldn’t do anything to prevent Mateo’s and Amelia’s deaths. As the two begged for mercy I placed myself between the murderer and his victims. Maybe if I was scared enough the knife wouldn’t go through me, and I would save them. Even if I was already dead, I was terrified when he raised his knife. As his knife descended I closed my eyes and prayed for Amelia’s and Mateo’s safety. I didn’t feel any pain, yet I was covered in blood. I could feel the hot liquid leaking down my face to my stomach. How could a ghost bleed? I thought. It couldn’t possibly be my blood, nor could it be Mateo’s or Amelia’s, since they were behind me. The blood had come from someone standing in front of me. I opened my blood covered eyes to find Richard laying still on the ground, and above was a woman holding an old, dirty anchor that had been on the ground. This woman, who I now recognized as Luci the owner of the restaurant that my family loved so much, had hit Richard on the head with the anchor. I had been so busy, watching Richard’s and the two kids steps that I didn’t even notice the woman following us. She had been standing beside the door at Luci and Ferns when we left, she must have seen the panicked look on Amelia's and Mateo’s face and decided to help. Luci untied the two adolescents and explained that she followed us knowing that Richard was up to no good. She also explained that she wanted revenge. Richard had tried to shut down her restaurant a couple of years back. When Luci mentioned that she owned the restaurants, Amelia’s eyes grew wide. “ Luci Kahn?” she asked. Luci looked confused, but answered the question. “ Kahn was my husband’s last name, but he passed away many years ago.”
Amelia, explained to Luci that before Richards attack she had learned that she was adopted, and later on learned that her birth parents owned Luci and Ferns Restaurant. Amelia was glad to meet her birth mother, but devastated to learn that her father had died. Mother and daughter left together , planning on introducing Luci to Amelia’s adoptive parents. Mateo decided to go back to his family. He had enough near death experiences for one day, he no longer wanted to die. Although the horrible event they all left happy.
Before the three of them left, they threw Richard's body in the lake. I stayed back and enjoyed his death. Richard Crimson, was lying lifeless somewhere on the bottom of this lake. My last dream finally came true. I no longer held my grudge nor was I bond to this cursed land, since he was dead. I would never have to see him again, I could finally move on. At last I was at peace. I closed my eyes and waited for whatever would be taking me away from this life. Nothing happened. Shouldn’t I be going to the light or something? Richard was dead, meaning I could move on. I sat down puzzled. What had I done wrong. I hadn’t been sitting long when I heard a splash. There couldn't possibly be fish in this lake, the water wasn’t even blue anymore, it was almost black. Even the weeds near the water were dead or dry, this water was toxic, no fish could survive in there. I approached the lake, looking for what had made that sound. Something was coming towards land, it was big and seemed to be swimming. Once it arrived on land, the thing lifted himself up. However, it was not a thing, it was a man. A filthy man, covered in oil and mud from the toxic lake. Even covered in mud, I recognized the monster's face. How could I’ve not of? That evil face had haunted me for quite sometime. I shouted in anger, my companions were too far away to notice their mistake and I would never be capable of warning them that Richard Crimson Jr had not died.
